Symmetries: Some Scattered Remarks

In this talk I do two things. First, I highlight two different ways of thinking about symmetries – “interpretationally” and “motivationally” – and I defend the latter. Second, I argue that, at least according to one popular way of thinking about symmetries (which is orthogonal to the interpretational vs motivational question), they are – in an important sense, and contrary to what many people seem to think – *conceptually redundant* tools of metaphysical theorising.
