Philosophy of Mind & Cognitive Science

Winter Semester 2020-21, University of Bonn

Philosophy of Mind – Reading List

In this seminar we will discuss several topics in analytic philosophy of mind. We will mainly be using the collection “Philosophy of Mind: Classical and Contemporary Readings”, edited by David Chalmers, as well as several contemporary articles. After an introductory lecture (3 Nov 2020), and some classical readings from the above collection—in order to get everyone on the same page—we will dive deeper into contemporary papers. The choice of topics will to some extent depend on the students’ preferences, which will be discussed during the first session.

Apart from the introductory session, sessions will consist of discussions of one paper per session. Students are expected to have read that paper, in order to be able to engage with the discussion. (Further background readings will sometimes be suggested, but are optional.) Each of those sessions will commence with a student giving a short (around 10 minutes) presentation of the paper as an introduction to the discussion.

Readings will be posted on eCampus and here (see above). There is no required reading for the first session (but see the secondary reading on the reading list).
